Description

Finally completed my pic based on my Disney's Sky High sketch! [link]
left to right:

top row- The Commander (Steve Stronghold), Will (Stronghold), Jetstream (Josie Stronghold), Richie Armstrong (Lash)

2nd row- Larry Mason (Boulder Boy), Warren Peace (Flamethrower)

3rd row- Layla Williams (Garden Girl), Gwen Grayson/Sue Tenney (Technopath/Royal Pain), Dominic Dasher (Speed), Ethan Daniels (Liquid Lad)

Bottom row- Zach Edison (Neon), Penny Copperton (Replica), Magenta Chen (Critter)

- Some of the characters i created alter ego names for. some of the last names belonged to the actors who played the character, some i felt just fit. Lash's name came from Stretch Armstrong and Reed Richards)

I envisioned Sky High: Sophomore Year, as a 12 issue comic book maxi-series with two double sized bookend issues; Orientation & Yearbook. It would also be complemented by the following mini-series or one-shots; Sky High: Summer School, Summer Vacation, Class Trip & Class Reunion.

Commander: During SH: Summer Vacation, the Strongholds and Layla go to visit both sets of Will’s grandparents. They start off visiting Jack and Rosie Stronghold (who inadvertently reveal that they have indestructibility and super strength respectively). Steve was under the impression that he was a 1st generation super-powered person. They hid their abilities from him to try to give him a normal life after they decided to retire. During their visit, the former costumed adventurers get into a super powered domestic dispute when it is revealed that Jack had an affair with one of his longtime female super villains. Not only that, but the union produced a child that Jack was unaware of. That child grew up to become…Barron Battle! Warren Peace’s dad! During their stay with Josie’s parents, they learn that her dad has the ability of flight & her mom is endowed with super-speed, but her sister and brother are powerless.

Jetstream: In SH: Class Reunion, all of the city’s heroes return to the school as alumni for their reunion. The Commander and Jetstream, who are arguing, see former flames at the event. The city’s criminal element takes advantage of the lack of superhero presence in the city and starts a crime spree that the alumni go to thwart. Steve and Josie actually split up and partner with their former flames for the crisis.

Warren: Warren goes to visit his dad in prison. The cell is patterned off of the detention room technology and dampens his abilities. Barron Battle confirms that he IS the illegitimate Stronghold son, making Warren and Will 1st cousins. He tries to put Warren back on a dark path, and turn him against the Strongholds, who take him in after Warren’s mom takes ill and winds up in the hospital. Warren’s girlfriend (Freeze-Girl) gets attacked by a serial rapist & she freezes him to death. Warren arrives after the fact, but torches the remains when the authorities approach, to make it look like he was responsible. They escape, but when the news shows Warren as the suspect, Will goes after him and they fight. Warren gets taken down by a division of the police force tasked with dealing with super powered villains. Will & the others try to prove his innocence after he is taken into custody, even though Will initially assumes Warren is guilty.

Technopath: In SH: Summer School, the faculty decide that the students that participated in the Royal Pain scandal are to repeat their senior year in hopes to council them away from the dark path. Sue Tenny’s fragile grip on reality is lost when her guardian/lackey is killed in a random act of violence. The faculty work to help her reclaim her sanity, but the most they are able to manage is to get her down to two distinct personalities: Sue Tenney, aka Royal Pain; hell-bent on vengeance and destruction, and Gwen Grayson; the sweet girl, student body president identity she created. This identity has no recollection of the other alter. She does, however, remember having romantic feelings for Will, but cannot recall why they are no longer together. This is difficult for Will and Layla, who cannot reveal the truth without risking triggering her shift into her other personality.

Zach: During SH: Orientation, the faculty holds an assembly for the new/returning students to discuss the changes in the curriculum. The class designates are no longer Hero-Support/ Hero, but Hero/ Super-Hero. Both classes get lessons in heroics and tactical support, albeit different ratios. After the assembly, the sophomore class winds up back in the gym with Coach Boomer. He tells them that another new practice is to assign code names for mandatory community service. As each student comes up, he makes them show what they’ve learned over the summer. Zach again goes before being called, and says he’s taken his ability to the next level! The lights are dimmed and Zach gets his glow to a visible level…then he changes the color. Boomer rips into him and then says no matter what the school policy is, he’ll still be a SIIIIDDDEEEEKICK!!! Blasting him off the stage. He then names the other classmen, including Carbon Copy Kid, Acid Spit, Arachnid Kid, Freeze Girl, and Rebound.

Ethan: During Coach Boomer’s naming session, Ethan goes up and turns into a puddle again. When the coach says, he guesses he didn’t learn much, the puddle rises up and begins to take Ethan’s form before flying around the room in loops and streams. He takes his normal form back with Coach, who then gives him the code name Liquid Lad. One of the classes he attends is Shifting 101 with Magenta, Larry, Rebound, and Carbon Copy Kid. At some point during the year, Ethan will learn that he also has a vapor form. Ethan has a younger sister who is an incoming freshman.

Maj: Magenta shows coach Boomer that she can take the form of other small woodland creatures. When he attempts to belittle her ability once again, in the form of a rabbit, she kicks him across the gym. It seems that she maintains the proportionate strength of the form she is in, as if it were her normal height and weight, making her stronger in animal form. Boomer names her Critter. She spends time with Zach, but he is hesitant to pursue her romantically…until new senior, Kid Spex starts paying her attention.

Larry: A victim of his popularity gained during freshman year, Larry is prone to showing off. He constantly competes with Will to see who’s stronger. When his star status begins to fade, he gets approached by the school’s new resident bullies Kid Spex( the kid with the laser vision that zapped and was frozen by Freeze-Girl, and is Nurse Spex grandson), and his partner- Goon. He initially turns them down until a girl that he likes starts hanging with them. When one of their pranks goes horribly wrong, Spex and Larry get into a fight. During it, one of the rocks that comprise Larry’s alterform is pulverized by Spex’ eye blast. Larry is physically ok, but scared to shift back to human form, for fear that a chunk of his torso will be missing and he will bleed to death.

Layla: In SH: Class Trip, Layla is forced to be lab partners with Gwen in Medula’s science class. When an experiment goes awry, Layla and the others get transported to a dark future where they are evil dictators to the planet. They are confronted by Stranglehold(Will), Demeter(Layla), Inferno(Warren), Liquid Lord(Ethan), and Creature Queen(Maj). There is no alternate version of Zach, because he was killed by Stranglehold. The kids have to survive long enough to find this world’s Technopath so that they can find a way back to their own reality.

Lash: During the semester, Lash gets closer to Penny. They eventually start dating. Things get hectic when one of Penny’s replicants starts to develop her own personality. This version… Penny2, starts to develop feelings for Speed. The two friends get into a fight when Lash sees Speed kissing one of the Pennys. Lash has an abusive father and a younger brother who is an incoming freshman.

Penny: After disowning and then coming to terms with her replicant’s newfound independence, Penny gets swept up in the attack on Sky High after the Superpower Prison Break. Penny’s 1 & 2 face off against Barron Battle and one of the two gets killed, leaving either Lash or Speed devastated.

Speed: Has a younger sister who is an incoming freshman and has a crush on Zach. She is twice as nasty as Speed was.

The only other noteworthy thing is the introduction of a new student that I created. When one of the city’s heroes, the Night Defender, gets killed in action, his son is admitted to sky high as his only request in his last will, since he won’t be around to train him himself. The boy, Morgan, is a dark solitary, antisocial child. Always wearing black and a hood, he only answers to the self generated code name Dark Shadow (even though Ethan rhetorically asks if that name’s redundant). He is prone to go into long, disturbing, monologues about crushing evil and the fight against the scum of the earth! He, like his father has no powers, but is a promising criminologist and expert combatant. He doesn’t want to be at the school, but as it is his father’s last wish, he complies. Boomer has issues with Night Defender, and thru extension, his son. He doesn’t want him there. He says if he can survive five minutes in battle with some of the strongest students, he won’t petition to expel him. Dark Shadow goes up against Warren, Larry, Lash, Speed, ScareWolf(a fear inducing lycanthrope), Arachnid Kid, Kid Spex, and Will…and wins!
