The Guardians were among the first intelligent life forms in the universe and evolved on the planet Maltus, over time they became immortal, super-intelligent, and gained inherent God-like abilities. They developed a society devoted to knowledge and science, often involving themselves in experiments on other planets. A pivotal moment, billions of years ago, involved a Maltusian named Krona. Krona possessed a supreme genius-level intellect, but his arrogance, lack of patience, short temper and above all insatiable hunger for knowledge had gotten the better of him. The being that would eventually come to be known as the Anti-Monitor was created by the renegade Guardian Krona as the "ultimate being", one capable of anything, even time-travel. Krona wished to use his new creation's time-bending technology to observe the beginning of the Universe, despite the legends regarding the folly of this. When it was activated, it recognized its superiority and turned against Krona, forcing the Maltusians to try and stop this immensely powerful creation powered on the life energy of the universe itself. Millions of Maltusians were lost trying to stop it from travelling back to the point of creation including their homeworld. The few remaining crafted a device to channel the same energies through it- a lantern that concentrated the different spectrums into a massive beam to banish Anti-Monitor to another universe. However, a feedback loop from their quarry hit the machine, causing a explosion. This experiment unleashed evil across the universe and created the Multiverse, and the evil Anti-Matter universe. It was later revealed that the same experiment flooded the beginning of the Universe with entropy causing it "to be born old". Feeling responsible for Krona's actions, the surviving Maltusians relocated to the planet Oa (at "the center of the Universe") and became the Guardians of the Universe. Their goal was simple: combat evil and create an orderly universe. And they acted quickly on that goal. Early on in the history of the Universe, they learned how to manipulate what they called "The Glow" and transmit the different spectrums of it through the Intergalactic Ley Lines that ran throughout the fabric of the universe, and eventually created a series of Central Power Batteries to store and transmit this energy. This "energy" was actually the collective life energy of the inhabitants of the universe. Accessing and manipulating this force gave the Guardians an ultimate tool to pursue their goals.

Valorex:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, Brik of Sector 904
Valorex is one of the Guardians of the Universe. She is cold, blunt and unabashedly dislikes Green Lantern Harinezumi Jouon of Earth, whom she calls a " " . She has a reputation for relying on statistics and analysis rather than impulse and initiative. She radiates stern efficiency and practicality. She is not afraid of sending lanterns to die, but on occasion, goes out of her way to help her Squadrons and prevent a slaughter. She demonstrates confidence in her units and very slowly warms to the unorthodox efficiency of Hari and her colleagues in the Sector 2814. She ably liaises with high-profile alien government officials and is able to stall the political backlash against Oa and its processes and agents on many occasions. She will always stand by her decisions and her Corps Squads.

Scar:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, K'ryssma of Sector 1890
Left scarred by Krona's creation and the exposure to its antimatter energy reveals to have had dire consequences. She has since developed behavioral changes and is now depicted as dark, militaristic, and secretly fascinated by the power of death. Her fellow Guardians are unaware of the changes within her, as she is the Guardians Science Director and spends much time off to her own devices. She has strong sense of self preservation and shown a willingness to deceive her brethren to further her own goals.

Basilus:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, Raker Qarrigat of Sector 38
The Guardian in charge of the collective history of the Guardians, in the Book of Oa. He provides important advice and help to his Lantern Squads, but often in a cryptic way that does not make sense until the team has completed the mission that they were tasked to do. He has a tendency to drone on whist engaging in conversation ever since the Guardians resumed verbal communication.
- I based his personality (and design) on Dungeon Master of the Dungeons and Dragons Animated Series.

Ganthet:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, Kaio of Sector 3600
Ganthet is one of the Guardians of the Universe. However, where most of the Guardians are very stern 'by-the-book' characters, Ganthet has a personality that is more human-like, including displays of empathy and concern for an individual, instead of only thinking of the Green Lantern Corps. Often seen as the most likable of the Guardians, especially to Green Lanterns like Harinezumi Jouon. Unlike the other Guardians, Ganthet tries to help the Spectrum Lanterns on a more active level and keeps in touch with them whenever he is able to. Ganthet represents the voice of understanding and tolerance amongst the Guardians, as opposed to Appa Ali Apsa's staunch position of adhering strictly to rules. He takes a personal interest in Kaio, as he knows that something is brewing, with him being the only other survivor from his and John Stewart's reality.

Broome Bon Baris:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, Mogo of Sector 2261
Broome Bon Baris is one of the Guardians of the Universe from the planet Maltus. A deep thinker, Baris can be extremely difficult to engage in conversation. Her piercing eyes might convey arrogance, but in reality, she is simply contemplating how to ensure the Green Lantern Corps' survival.

Appa Ali Apsa:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, John Stewart of Sector 1417
Void of emotion and rigid in the Guardians compliance to standard policy, Appa comes about as the most stern of the Guardians. Often seen as the representative of the Guardians, he along with Valorex, deal the most with inter planetary relations with the governments of the other sectors. He was against Hari's inclusion into the Corps to replace A Bin Sur, but was outvoted. He feels she will prove unworthy, and constantly tests her by placing her in situations where she will prove him right.

Lianna:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, Gai Gardener of the Honor Guard
Graced with skills of command, determination, scholarly mind and strong sense of justice, Lianna has a keen intellect and learns quickly from her mistakes. with quiet determination, she reciprocates the loyalty of those who follow her with what can be perceived as gratitude and compassion. Along with the sectors under her command, Lianna is in charge of the Honor Guard. The Spectrum Lantern Honor Guard is an elite group of Spectrum Lanterns not restricted to one Sector. The Guard is based on Oa, and serves as flexible trouble-shooters, aiding any sector in need.
- I based her personality on Khaleesi/Daenarys "Stormborn" Targerean from Game of Thrones.

Sayd:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, Morro of Sector 666
Sayd is unlike the other Guardians, known for her non-traditional mindset, as she has secretly embraced emotions. These emotions have prompted her to harbor secret feelings for fellow Guardian , Ganthet, and to read the forbidden chapter from the Book of Oa, which foretold a prophecy of cosmic revelations. She also feels that the Guardians made a grave miscalculation in hiding the actions of the Manhunter Massacre in Sector 666, but has not openly stated her opposition to these actions. As a result to experiencing what was most likely guilt from her silence, it may have granted her access to the other emotions she had cut herself of from long ago with her brethren.

Ranakar:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, Harinezumi Jouon of Sector 2814
Ranakar was the first to officially nominate Harinezumi Jouon for full membership in the Corps after proving invaluable in helping to defeat an ancient foe. He is silently amused by her attitude and actions, but is very inquisitive to what causes her to do and say the things she does.
- I based his personality on Yoda from Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back, when he was on Degobah....and a little bat$#!+ crazy, but still had his skills and wits about him.

Herupa Hando Hu:
Notable Lantern Squad: Green Lantern, Bzzd of Sector 2261
- The only of the Guardians that is married. The Zamarons, another of the early races that were created alongside the Maltusians decided to stay out of the affairs of others for eons. The Guardians wished to garner their support in one of their campaigns, to which they declined. A challenge was issued forth, and the statuesque warrior queen named, Nadia Safir opposed this plan of unification and Herupa challenged her to a trial by combat. Nadia agreed that should he win, the Oans and the Zamarons would leave this world to settle down in an unknown, uncharted section of the universe. Herupa won the trial and Nadia agreed to become his consort.

- Krona's creation was depleted of all of the universal energy that powered it after the explosion that banished it to the anti-matter universe. For eons, it would slowly repower itself on the anti-matter energy of the new universe until it was strong enough to continue its mission...one universe at a time.
- After the incident with Krona, The Guardians decided that they would have to suppress emotions to avoid allowing them to cloud their judgment. There was a guardian who violated this edict and went renegade. The offender, Dawlakispokpok, was tracked down and imprisoned.
- instead of abandoning all emotion like the Maltusians, the Zamarons embraced one emotion in particular...love.
- Millenia ago after a protracted war they achieved an accord with the Reach, an alien race who turned out to be the source of the Nanosect Scarab bonded to Blue Beetle.
- On Mars, the Guardians confronted the destructive race known as "The Burning" and split the race into two new species: the Green Martians and the White Martians. The Guardians changed their reproductive behavior, and gave them an inherent fear of fire in order to stop their species from destroying much of the universe.
- The Guardians vision towards justice was very "black and white", and as such decided that the best way to enforce intergalactic peace was without emotion, which they had abandoned long ago to avoid another incident like the one caused by Krona.
-The Robotic Manhunters were created to patrol the Universe. They did so until an incident occurred which led to the eradication of a number of inhabited planets in a sector. The guardians realized that they needed the diversity of the various species that would comprise their new Corps to allow for greater perspective in dispensing galactic justice. The Manhunters were reprogrammed to be soldiers and subordinate to their successors who would become the Spectrum Lantern Corps.
- There are 3600 sectors of Guardian Patrolled Space. These are divided amongst the Guardians to watch over. Some of the sectors that do not fall under that banner fall under the jurisdiction of the Intergalactic Police Force (IGPF).
- The Green Spectrum was determined to be the most stable, and as such the Guardians decided that those connected to it would be the team leaders for each squadron. I did this to resemble the Red Ranger as Team Leader practice the Power Rangers have (whom the Spectrum Lanterns were modeled on as my anime inspiration).
- The Guardians reached an accord with the Spider Guild whereby they and their operatives would stay out of Vegan space. Due to this agreement the Omega Men will become the only peacekeepers in their sector.
- The Guardians waged a war against Apokolips,. They tried several times to infiltrate Darkseid's home, finally deciding on a war against his rule. Their troops were brutally defeated with two-thirds dead. An Alliance with New Genesis prompted a cease-fire, and the attack on Apokolips ended with a truce. Although the Apokolips campaign ended in a truce, the Guardians were forced to abandon a soldier (Raker Qarrigat) to Darkseid.
- I decided that I wanted to have the Guardians remain silent and communicate nonverbally to the various lantern corps squads. It isn't until Hari is summoned to Oa to answer for the death of A-Bin-Sur and the theft of his lightsuit that they resume verbal communication, as she was the first to infuriate one of them to the point that he felt the need to berate her vocally. She also was the first to openly challenge their decision to do so in countless millennia.
